The American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS) is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Zillur Rahman Khan (1938-2021), a founder Trustee of the AIBS (1986-1998).

On behalf of the AIBS we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of renowned political scientist and a scholar of Bangladesh studies Dr. Khan, Rosebush Professor Emeritus of the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Rahman pioneered the legacy of excellence across areas of research, engagement, and intellectual inquiry. He authored numerous books, book chapters, and scholarly articles in regional and international journals.

Dr. Rahman was an inspiration, breaking through the glass ceiling time and time again, receiving his university’s one of the most coveted awards, the Rosebush Professorship Award for his excellence in teaching, professional achievement and public service and the Willard Smith Distinguished Teaching Award. He also took several leadership roles at his Department and was recognized by his professional organizations such as the International Political Science Association and the American Political Science Association for Excellence in Teaching and Research. He was a great supporter of and advocate for the Bangladesh related scholarship and philanthropy. Dr Zillur was president of Bangladesh Foundation USA for 39 years since 1982. He died on 22 May at Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Rahman will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on for many years to come.
